Filament Swapping EM Correction

Compare filaments by measured diameter and calibrated extrusion multiplier.

Calculator

Pick each filament's color and type, then enter its measured diameter d (mm) and its calibrated extrusion multiplier EM. Pick the reference filament with the radio button; every other filament is compared against it.

Ref Color Type d (mm) EM A (mm²) Ae (mm²) EM relative

How it works

  • A = π·d²/4 — cross-sectional area of the filament.
  • Ae = A·EM — effective area, the amount of plastic actually delivered per mm of filament fed.
  • EM relative = Aeref ÷ Ae — the factor to apply when swapping from the reference filament to this one so the printer lays down the same volume.
Values above 1 mean the new filament delivers less plastic than the reference and needs more flow; below 1 means it needs less.
